In New Zealand's Southern Alps, glaciers are being tinged pink due to suspected air pollution from the Australian bushfires. Air pollution is a known cause of glacier depreciation, and it is an incredibly sad day when one environmental disaster can have further detrimental effects such as this, on glaciers so far away. The Australian bushfires that are currently occurring are capturing the attention of the world, as a devastating realisation that our planet is indeed... on fire. ⁠

Director @therealcraigleeson on expedition earlier this year. Craig is not a mountain man, he is terrified of heights and prefers to be in the ocean. However, Craig is also a journalist... he needs answers, and so exists our project @thelastglaciers. Alongside Producer @malcolmgwood, they aim to deliver the science behind climate change research in a way that can be understood by all, whilst also captivating audiences as Craig battles his fears upon the mountains alongside athletes who live in them.⁠

It’s International Mountain Day! ⁠
A day that is observed every year to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life and biodiversity, a goal much like our film @thelastglaciers. ⁠
Mountains are home to 15% of the world's population and a quarter of the world’s land animals and plants. They provide freshwater for everyday life to half of humanity. ⁠
Unfortunately, mountains are under threat from climate change and overexploitation. As the global climate continues to warm, mountain people — some of the world’s poorest — face even greater struggles to survive. The rising temperatures also mean that mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people.⁠
This problem affects us all, we must not underestimate the role that mountains play.⁠

Heading to our basecamp in the Langtang Valley, Himalayas. The high altitude areas of the Langtang Valley show a consistent trend of increase in temperature - clear evidence of the global warming that has resulted in the fast melting of glaciers with socio-economic impacts of such changes on the livelihood of marginal communities residing downstream the affected areas. ⁠

Can you spot our basecamp amongst these Himalayan giants? This photo was taken at nearly 5500m, which shows you how just how high the snowfall line is. Just out of sight of the camera lies Yala Glacier, a plateau glacier situated among its surrounding peaks. ⁠
Researchers have been recording the mass of Yala for many years, and it has been constantly shrinking. Studies such as this are essential for the region, as glaciers influence the hydrological cycle and water availability, whilst glacier mass balance data is globally relevant as a climate indicator.⁠
